Products & How They Work

What are NaturaLux light filters and how do they work?
NaturaLux light filters are professional-grade lighting solutions designed to transform harsh fluorescent and LED lighting into natural, comfortable light. Our filters eliminate glare, block harmful UV radiation, color-correct the light spectrum, and reduce visual stress. They work by using specially engineered materials with colored pigments and UV-absorbing compounds that filter the light as it passes through, creating a more balanced and natural lighting environment.
Which type of filter should I choose: tube covers or flat panel covers?
Flat Panel Covers are designed for fixtures with existing plastic panels or metallic louvers. They sit on top of your current fixture and work for both fluorescent and LED fixtures. Tube Covers are designed for open fixtures where there is no supporting panel. The fluorescent bulb slides into the sleeve and is twisted back into place. Important: We do not recommend tube filters for T5 HO (high output) bulbs as they generate too much heat.
Do these filters work with dimming systems or smart lights?
Yes. Our light filters work with existing lights and lighting systems, including dimmers and smart lights. There is no interference with any lighting controls or building automation systems.
How do these compare to just changing the bulb color temperature?
NaturaLux filters do much more than change color temperature. They provide glare elimination which is the primary cause of headaches and cannot be achieved by changing bulbs alone, color temperature enhancement without needing expensive specialty bulbs, UV blocking as standard bulbs still emit harmful UV radiation, and color correction improving CRI from 88.4 to 95.3. Even if you use 5000K bulbs, you still need our filters to eliminate glare and block UV radiation.
What's the difference between your product and generic light diffusers from hardware stores?
NaturaLux was designed for visual ergonomics by a certified ophthalmologist. Generic diffusers simply scatter light to reduce brightness with no color correction or UV blocking. NaturaLux filters are spectrally engineered to enhance specific wavelengths, eliminate glare through reflective coating technology, block 100% UVB and 98% UVA radiation, improve Color Rendering Index to 95.3, have a Class A fire rating for institutional safety, and have a 10+ year lifespan with no degradation.
Will my space be much darker with the filters installed?
NaturaLux filters only reduce light output by 18%, allowing 80% of the light through. Most commercial spaces are over-lit, creating excessive glare. By reducing the over-abundance of light by approximately 20%, the glare is completely eliminated while maintaining more than adequate illumination. For extremely bright environments, you may use two filters per fixture for additional light reduction.
What color temperature bulbs should I use with NaturaLux filters?
For optimal color balance, we recommend using either 4100K or 5000K bulbs. Our testing shows that 3500K bulbs are too orange and 6500K bulbs are too bluish-green. The 4100K to 5000K range provides the best balance when combined with NaturaLux filters.
What's the difference between using NaturaLux filters and full spectrum bulbs?
Full spectrum bulbs use a mixture of red, green and blue phosphors but the red phosphors decay at an accelerated rate causing them to lose their full spectrum properties over time. They still emit UV radiation and create glare. NaturaLux filters use engineered colored pigments embedded in plastic material, achieve natural color-accurate and color-balanced light, maintain consistent performance for 10+ years, eliminate glare regardless of bulb type, and work with standard less expensive bulbs.
I'm looking to tone down the brightness of our LED lights. Will this work?
Yes. Our LED light covers will effectively tone down brightness. NaturaLux reduces light output by approximately 18% while eliminating glare and color-correcting the spectrum. For super bright LEDs, many customers have successfully used two filters on each light fixture for additional light reduction providing approximately 36% light reduction when doubled.
What color are the filters? Will they look strange in my space?
The light covers have a purple-ish blue hue that is specifically engineered to enhance the color spectrum. They do not come in any other colors because any other color would not be effective at providing the visual ergonomic benefits. Once installed, you likely will not notice the color of the filter very much. They blend in and provide a professional appearance.
What is the difference between the LED Light Cover and the Fluorescent Light Cover?
They provide the same benefits and are made exactly the same. They are listed separately to make it easier to find a product that fits a specific application.
Will these work with my existing light bulbs?
Yes. Our fluorescent light covers are designed to work with your existing light bulbs and lamps. No special bulbs are necessary. However, for optimal results, we recommend using bulbs in the 4100K to 5000K color temperature range.
How do fluorescent light covers reduce glare?
NaturaLux filters use a special highly reflective coating on our material. The excess glare is bounced back into the light and not at people underneath the lighting. Excess glare is completely eliminated through this reflective polymer technology.
Are these decorative fluorescent light covers?
No. NaturaLux light filters are clean and professional looking optical devices designed for visual ergonomics. Our filters do not have fancy distracting designs. They are precision-engineered to actually change the light output through glare elimination, UV blocking, and color correction, not just provide decoration.
Do they work with LED lights?
Yes. The same properties apply to both fluorescent and LED lighting issues. Most of the time, the light cover can be trimmed to fit an LED light. Our LED light covers can be installed inside your existing cover if you are able to remove it, or affixed to the outside of the light fixture using double sided tape.
What makes NaturaLux different from other light filter products?
NaturaLux was designed for visual ergonomics by a certified ophthalmologist, not just to diffuse light but to optimize it for human vision and health. We use specially engineered materials with embedded pigments and UV-absorbing compounds, maintain a Class A fire rating for safety, provide a 10+ year lifespan with no degradation, improve Color Rendering Index to 95.3, and block 100% UVB and 98% UVA radiation. Generic diffusers cannot provide these benefits.
Why were these filters originally developed?
Our company was originally founded in Alaska, a place known for limited sunlight, specifically to address the challenges of poor lighting and its effects on mood, health, and productivity. NaturaLux filters were designed by a certified ophthalmologist to provide full-spectrum light that mimics natural sunlight.
Can I use two filters for extra light reduction?
Yes. For very intense lighting situations or super bright LEDs, you may need or want two filters in place on each light fixture. Using two filters provides approximately 36% light reduction while maintaining glare elimination and color correction benefits.

Health & Wellness

Will these help with autism spectrum disorder or ADHD?
Yes. Our light filters are widely used in sensory environments and specialized learning facilities. Research shows that up to 50% of individuals with autism have severe sensitivity to fluorescent lighting, and approximately 69% of people with ADHD report being oversensitive to light. NaturaLux filters eliminate the flicker that triggers sensory sensitivities, reduce glare that causes visual overstimulation, and create more natural light that reduces stress.
How do these compare to wearing tinted glasses for light sensitivity?
NaturaLux filters provide a permanent, room-wide solution while tinted glasses only help the individual wearing them. Filters treat the entire environment benefiting everyone in the space, create consistent lighting for all activities, and often eliminate the need for specialty glasses. Many customers who previously relied on tinted glasses find they no longer need them after installing NaturaLux.
I get migraines and headaches from fluorescent lights. How quickly will I notice a difference?
Immediately. The results can be felt as soon as the whole area is covered with NaturaLux lighting. Most people report relief from eyestrain, headaches, and visual fatigue within the first day of installation. For best results, ensure all lights within an 8-foot radius are filtered.
Do these actually help with Seasonal Affective Disorder?
Yes. Our products help balance the color spectrum to be closer to natural sunlight, which is beneficial for people with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Our company was originally founded in Alaska to address these challenges. NaturaLux filters raise the Color Rendering Index to 95.3 compared to 88.4 for standard bulbs, balance the color temperature closer to natural daylight, and provide full-spectrum light that supports mood regulation.
Will these protect me from UV exposure if I have lupus or photosensitivity?
Yes. NaturaLux filters provide exceptional UV protection: 100% UVB radiation blocked (280-320nm) and 98% UVA energy blocked (320-700nm). Specifically: 100% UV up to 380nm, 99% up to 390nm, and 80% up to 400nm. Many individuals with lupus have reported they can now work under filtered lighting for an entire shift with no adverse effects from UV exposure.
How do I know if I have glare in my office or workspace?
Here is a simple test: Place your open hand above your eyebrows as if you are saluting. If it becomes much easier on your eyes when you do this, you most likely are dealing with glare. Other signs include squinting under overhead lights, headaches that start or worsen at work, eyes feeling tired by mid-afternoon, and difficulty focusing on computer screens.
Can fluorescent light covers improve health?
Fluorescent light covers help mitigate many of the negative side effects of working under fluorescent light for a prolonged period of time. NaturaLux filters truly transform the light by eliminating glare that causes headaches and eyestrain, blocking UV radiation that can cause health issues, providing full-spectrum light that supports mood and sleep regulation, and reducing visual stress that leads to fatigue.

Installation & Sizing

How do I know what size fluorescent bulb I have?
Fluorescent bulb sizes are measured in 1/8 inch increments: T12 bulbs are 1.5 inches in diameter (12/8 inch), T8 bulbs are 1 inch in diameter (8/8 inch), and T5 bulbs are 5/8 inch in diameter. You can find this information printed on the bulb itself or on the box. Look for markings like F32T8SP35 where the T8 indicates the bulb diameter.
How difficult is installation? What tools do I need?
Installation is very easy and can be accomplished with basic tools. For Flat Panel Covers, you will need scissors or a utility knife, a ruler, and clear tape. For Tube Covers, no tools are needed. Just remove the bulb, slide the tube cover over it, attach the end caps, and twist the bulb back into the fixture.
What if my fixture has an unusual size or custom dimensions?
Our flat light covers are made of flexible, thin material that can be easily trimmed to size with scissors or a utility knife. The standard size is 23.25 inches by 48 inches by .015 inches, which can be cut to fit virtually any fixture smaller than this.
Do the filters need any special cleaning or maintenance?
No maintenance is required. Our flat light covers feature a matte finish on one side that naturally repels dust and dirt. Our tube filters are easily removable when you need to change light bulbs. The filters themselves never need to be cleaned or replaced under normal use.
Do you offer custom cut sizes?
We do not offer custom cutting services. However, our panels are very easy to cut yourself with a straightedge and razor blade or a good pair of scissors. The material cuts cleanly and precisely.
Can I use these in damp environments like bathrooms or kitchens?
Our products are designed primarily for interior use in professional settings such as offices, classrooms, healthcare facilities, and retail spaces. While some homeowners have successfully used our light filters in their kitchens or living areas, our focus is on business-to-business and business-to-government applications.
What type of fixtures can I use these covers on?
Flat panel covers are designed for most common recessed light fixtures. If your light fixture is flush with the ceiling such as a parabolic or prismatic fixture, they will work. Tube covers work in fixtures where there is no supporting panel or louver, including fixtures that are flush to the ceiling or suspended. The overlay light filters are oversized and can be trimmed to fit.
How much do you reduce light output?
NaturaLux filters reduce light output by 18%, allowing 80% of the light through. You can expect a reduction of the light by about 18 to 20%. The glare will be removed and the light will be color corrected which softens the overall effect significantly.
Can these filters work in very hot environments?
Yes. Our flat panel covers have a continuous service temperature range of 150 to 170 degrees Fahrenheit, deflection temperature under load of 176 degrees Fahrenheit, and Vicat softening point of 227 degrees Fahrenheit. They are designed to safely withstand the heat that fluorescent and LED light fixtures can emit.
